About Chairman
Fr. Agnal Amalan, CRS
Fr. Agnal Amalan, CRS is a priest of the Congregation of Clerics Regular of Somascan, popularly known as the Somascan Fathers, a religious congregation founded by St. Jerome Emiliani and dedicated to the service of the poor, the young, and the marginalized through education, pastoral care, and social commitment. He was ordained to the priesthood in the year 2010.
- Soon after his ordination, Fr. Agnal was entrusted with missionary service in Sri Lanka, where he spent six formative years in ministry during the challenging period following the tsunami and amidst the years of civil conflict. Serving as Regent and Priest, he was actively involved in pastoral accompaniment, formation and reconstruction-oriented ministry, gaining valuable experience in intercultural mission, conflict-affected contexts and compassionate leadership.
- Committed to academic and theological formation, Fr. Agnal pursued higher studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, where he obtained a Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology (2014–2016). He also holds an M.Phil. in English Literature, reflecting his interdisciplinary engagement with theology, language and humanistic studies. His academic background has significantly shaped his approach to preaching, teaching, formation and institutional leadership.
- Within the governance and formation structures of the Somascan Province, Fr. Agnal has rendered notable service. He served as Provincial Councillor from 2016 to 2020 and concurrently as Superior of the Major Seminary during 2019–2020, contributing significantly to priestly formation, community life and administrative planning. Since 2020, he has been serving as the Principal and Correspondent of St. Jerome’s College, Bangalore, where he continues to guide the institution in its academic growth, value-based education and social outreach.
- In January 2024, Fr. Agnal Amalan was elected Provincial of the Indian Province of the Somascan Fathers, which encompasses missions in India, Sri Lanka and Australia. In this role, he provides spiritual, pastoral and administrative leadership, fostering fidelity to the Somascan charism while responding creatively to contemporary ecclesial and social realities.
- Beyond the Congregation, Fr. Agnal contributes actively to leadership at the national and regional levels. In May 2024, he was elected as an Executive Member of the Conference of Religious India (CRI) at the national level, serving as Secretary and Treasurer of the Priest Section. Further, in July 2025, he was elected President of the Karnataka Regional Commission for Religious (KRCR) and appointed Vice President of the Karnataka Regional Commission for Education (KRCE), collaborating closely with religious congregations in promoting consecrated life, education and mission.
- Fr. Agnal Amalan is widely known for his effective and insightful preaching, his ability to communicate theology in a clear and engaging manner and his commitment to youth formation and accompaniment. He is a sought-after resource person for seminars, retreats and formation programmes and has served as a keynote speaker on various ecclesial, educational and pastoral occasions at diocesan, regional and national levels.
- He is recognised for his balanced integration of pastoral sensitivity, academic depth and administrative competence. His ministry continues to be guided by a deep commitment to faith formation, educational excellence and service to the Church and society, inspired by the charism of St. Jerome Emiliani and attentive to the guidance of the Spirit in a rapidly changing world.
